An imperious display by Roger Federer saw him end Novak Djokovic’s 43-match winning run and set up a meeting with Rafael Nadal in the French Open final. Serbian second seed Djokovic went off the rails as the third-seeded Federer raised his game to new heights to reach his fifth final at Roland Garros, and his first Grand-Slam final since last year’s Australian Open.
The match was much closer than a three set to one victory would lead one to believe. Novak Djokovic said after losing the match, “Unfortunately, it came in the bad moment. It was a big match today. But that’s sport. I will keep on working hard.” The 2009 champion, 29-year-old Swiss rode the momentum to break for 3-1 in the second set, which he won after saving a break point in the ninth game with an ace.
The 2009 champion, 29-year-old Swiss and with a men’s record 16 Grand Slam singles titles to his name, has not won a major tournament since the 2010 Australian Open. Victory for Federer would take his personal Grand Slam collection to 17 and deliver a perfectly-timed response to those who had written him off as a major contender.
Sixtht seed Li has won 4 WTA and 19 ITF singles titles. Li became Asia’s first Grand Slam finalist when she entered the women’s singles final of the 2011 Australian Open, where she lost to Kim Clijsters. Li would go on to defeat Clijsters 7–6, 6–3 last year. In the first set, Li raced into a 3-0 lead and broke three times as Sharapova, who took two games off the Chinese player’s serve, struggled for rhythm in the wind and on the clay.
This is really an exciting moment in China—”I’m rooting for you, I wish you well. You are the pride of China and we’ve got your back!” one with the handle JoJoJiao wrote on the country’s most popular microblogging site Weibo.
